Study says plastics, detergent, coatings, and lubricant plants have presumptive contamination

 

By the time the eastern reservoirs failed, Mara had already forgotten the word her grandmother used for the color of water just before it turned dangerous.

She remembered that there had been a word. That was the problem.

In Mainstream, the official notice described the water as cloudy. Three days later, after the first children developed tremors, the wording was revised to potentially contaminated. By then the evacuation trains were full, the western platforms had been sealed, and the Ministry of Civic Communication had issued a statement reminding citizens that “unverified legacy terminology” was not a substitute for scientific evidence.

Mara read the statement twice.

Her grandmother had never called it science.

She had called it knowing what you were looking at.

Sixteen years earlier, in a classroom whose walls were still painted different colors, Mara had been instructed to write down every language spoken in her home.

“Mainstream,” she wrote first.

Then, beneath it, in smaller letters, she added Leyan.

The teacher circled the second word in red.

“You won’t need that much longer,” she said.

Mara had thought she meant the assignment.

The Language Consolidation Act had passed the previous winter, although nobody in her neighborhood called it that. Adults spoke instead about the narrowing. At first, nothing seemed to disappear. Street signs were replaced. Public forms became shorter. Television anchors stopped switching languages when interviewing older residents. Schools announced that teaching children a single shared language would eliminate “communicative inequality.”

Then the old dictionaries vanished from libraries.

After that, the people who could still read them began to vanish from public jobs.

The government did not forbid Leyan immediately. It made Leyan unnecessary, then inconvenient, then embarrassing. Only at the end did it make Leyan illegal.

By that point, most children no longer understood enough of it to know what had been taken from them.

Tomorrow morning, Mara would stand before the Review Board and explain why she had opened Archive 7.

She had already rehearsed the approved answer.

“I accessed obsolete linguistic material in the course of an authorized historical investigation.”

It was almost true.

What she would not say was that Archive 7 contained her grandmother’s voice.

The recording was forty-two seconds long. Most of it was ordinary: instructions for cleaning fish, a complaint about Mara’s uncle, laughter at something happening beyond the microphone.

Then came the sentence Mara had spent six months trying to understand.

She knew every Mainstream word into which the software translated it.

None of the translations meant the same thing.

The closest version was:

When the river looks backward, leave before the birds do.

The phrase had been classified by the translation system as folklore.

Mara had classified it as nonsense.

Until the reservoirs failed.

The engineers later discovered that the contamination had not begun in the reservoirs at all. It had entered upstream, where a change in water density had reversed a seasonal current beneath the visible surface.

The birds had left two days before the first sensors triggered an alarm.

Mara never told anyone this.

By then, doing so would have required explaining how she knew.

Instead, she searched the restricted archives for other phrases the translation software had labeled figurative, redundant, or culturally specific.

There were thousands.

A mountain community had once used separate verbs for snow that could bear a person’s weight and snow that only appeared able to. Coastal speakers had distinguished several kinds of retreating water, one of which frequently preceded seismic waves. In the southern agricultural districts, farmers had maintained expressions describing subtle changes in insect behavior before crop disease.

Mainstream had words for all of these things.

It simply did not divide the world in the same places.

The Ministry had insisted for decades that nothing had been lost because anything worth saying could be translated.

Mara began to suspect that this was the wrong test.

Perhaps a sentence could survive translation while the habit of noticing what made the sentence necessary did not.

Her father had understood this earlier.

She realized that only after finding his disciplinary file.

He had not been dismissed from the Central Hospital for speaking Leyan to a patient, as Mara had always been told. He had been dismissed for refusing to replace three Leyan symptom descriptions with a single Mainstream diagnostic category.

The Board called his objection “linguistic sentimentalism.”

Four patients died that month.

The file did not say whether the deaths were related.

It did not need to.

On the morning of Mara’s hearing, the city loudspeakers announced a new educational initiative.

Children would now be taught that pre-Consolidation languages had been inefficient systems developed by isolated populations before the emergence of universal communication.

The announcement played while Mara waited outside the Review Chamber.

Beside her sat a boy of perhaps eight years old, holding his mother’s hand.

The mother whispered something to him.

Not Mainstream.

The boy frowned.

“What does that mean?”

His mother hesitated.

Mara recognized the expression, although she had not heard it since childhood.

There was no exact translation.

The closest Mainstream equivalent would have been Be careful.

But that was not what the woman had said.

She had told him, roughly, to move through the world as though the world were capable of answering back.

The doors to the Review Chamber opened.

Mara stood.

For the first time in sixteen years, she answered someone in Leyan.
